5 Chainsaw Parts You Can’t Live Without

The Chain.

The chain is the part of the saw that actually cuts through wood. It’s made up of multiple links, each with teeth that cut into the wood as the chain moves back and forth. If the chain breaks, the entire saw will stop working.

The Sprocket.

The sprocket is the gear that turns the chain. It has teeth that mesh with the teeth of the chain. The sprocket is usually attached to the motor shaft by means of a keyway.

The Pulley System.

The pulleys are the gears that turn the chain. They are located at either end of the bar. There are two main types of pulleys: fixed and floating. Fixed pulleys are mounted directly onto the bar. Floating pulleys are mounted on the ends of the bar and allow the bar to move up and down as the chain moves through them.

The Bar.

The bar is the part of the saw that holds the teeth of the chain together. It has three main functions: 1) hold the chain; 2) guide the chain; 3) provide leverage.

The Guard.

The guard is the first line of defense against flying debris. If you’re using a carbide blade, the guard will protect you from chips and cracks. If you’ve got a miter saw, the guard protects you from flying wood shavings.
